Ex Situ è un progetto a cura di Lucrezia Cippitelli (Artistic Director di Ateliers Picha e curatore della 7a Biennale di Lubumbashi) e Ramdom e prodotto da Ramdom e realizzato con il sostegno dell’Italian Council (X Edizione, 2021) programma di promozione di arte contemporanea italiana nel mondo della Direzione Generale Contemporanea del Ministero della Cultura.
Il progetto intende riflettere sulla relazione tra attività estrattiva e sfruttamento delle risorse naturali; sulla tossicità delle terre toccate da pratiche estrattiviste neocoloniali e sull’agro ecologia, tema nodale per la Repubblica Democratica del Congo, dove la produzione agricola e la sovranità alimentare sono inesistenti a seguito di oltre un ventennio di guerre civili che hanno disgregato i territori.
Partner principale è Picha Asbl, organizzazione indipendente di base a Lubumbashi e fondatore della Biennale di Lubumbashi, dove Luigi Coppola sta conducendo una ricerca site-specific insieme agli artisti locali a sostegno dello sviluppo teorico e formale del progetto Ex-Situ. I partners internazionali ospiteranno inoltre momenti di diffusione e confronto sui temi individuati dalla Biennale attraverso mostre, residenze, panel discussions, talks e proiezioni.
Oltre a Picha Asbl, il progetto è realizzato in collaborazione con CAD+ sr (center for arts, design and social research) (Boston, USA); Royal Institute of Art (Stoccolma, Svezia); IASPIS Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s international programme for Visual and Applied Artists, (Stoccolma, Svezia); Framer Framed (Utrecht, Paesi Bassi); Arts Catalyst (Sheffield, UK); Wiels (Bruxelles, Belgio).
Presso IASPIS primo momento internazionale con il webinar dal titolo Cultural and Artistic Narratives on Inhabiting Environmental Disaster. Qui artisti, pensatori e curatori di diversi contesti sono invitati a riflettere sul rapporto tra cultura ed ecologia. Prendendo spunto dai casi di tre diverse regioni, Katanga (RDC), Turchia e Sud Italia, gli ospiti invitati discutono del ruolo dell’arte e della produzione culturale nei territori in cui lo sfruttamento della terra, la monocultura e la sovrapproduzione industriale creano disastri ambientali.
Come immaginare un’etica del mondo che sia socialmente ed ecologicamente auspicabile in vista della fine del mondo? Come ripercorrere le traiettorie delle catene di responsabilità nei paesi occidentali? Come immaginare alleanze capaci di ripensare le pratiche dell’agro ecologia come modalità di conservazione e cura comuni? E come ripensare una temporalità differente che interrompa le visioni a breve termine per cambiare il nostro futuro immaginato?
Partendo da queste domande, il webinar sarà aperto da una lezione di Marco Armiero – Direttore dell’Environmental Humanity Laboratory (Royal Institute of Technology, Stoccolma), proseguirà con un intervento video realizzato dell’Atelier Picha di Lubumbashi introdotto da Lucrezia Cippitelli (curatrice della Biennale di Lumbumbashi) e si chiuderà, infine, con una conversazione tra i borsisti IASPIS 2022 tra cui Luigi Coppola e Asli Uludag.
Unendo l’immaginazione artistica contemporanea con nuove strategie d’azione, il webinar intende discutere il ruolo delle pratiche artistiche che promuovono la trasformazione sociale.
Il webinar è ideato da IASPIS in collaborazione con Royal Institute of Art Stockholm nell’ambito di Ex Situ.
La ricerca del progetto prevede infine due periodi di residenza a Lubumbashi presso Atelier Picha: il primo di studio e il secondo di formalizzazione dell’opera.
L’opera finale, che consiste in un’installazione con grandi banner dipinti su tela, vasi in terra cruda e del materiale di ricerca, studio e documentazione dell’intero processo, sarà presentata presso il Centro d’Arte Picha e aperta al pubblico durante la prossima Biennale di Lubumbashi.

Ex Situ is a project curated by Lucrezia Cippitelli (Artistic Director of Ateliers Picha and curator of the 7th Lubumbashi Biennale) and Ramdom and produced by Ramdom and supported by the Italian Council (10th Edition, 2021) program to promote Italian contemporary art in the world by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.
Ex Situ intends to reflect on the relationship between extractive activity and exploitation of natural resources; on the toxicity of the lands affected by neo-colonial extractive practices and on agro-ecology, a nodal theme for the Democratic Republic of Congo, where agricultural production and food sovereignty are non-existent due to more than twenty years of civil wars that have disrupted the territories.
Picha Asbl, an independent organization based in Lubumbashi and founder of the Lubumbashi Biennial, is the main partner of the project. Here is where Luigi Coppola is leading site-specific research along with local artists to support the theoretical and formal development of the project Ex-Situ. The international dissemination of the themes that stand underneath the Biennale, will be hosted in formats such as exhibitions, residencies, panel discussions, talks, and screenings by also other international partners.

At IASPIS the first international moment of the project with the webinar entitled Cultural and Artistic Narratives on Inhabiting Environmental Disaster where artists, thinkers, and curators from diverse backgrounds are invited to reflect on the relationship between culture and ecology, monoculture, and industrial overproduction create environmental disasters.
How to imagine a world ethic that is socially and ecologically desirable given the end of the world? How to retrace the trajectories of chains of responsibility in Western countries? How to imagine alliances capable of rethinking the practices of agroecology as modes of shared conservation and care? And how to rethink a different temporality that interrupts short-term visions to change our imagined future?
Starting from these questions, the webinar will be opened by a lecture of Marco Armiero Director of Environmental Humanity Laboratory (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm), continues with a video intervention from Atelier Picha from Lubumbashi introduced by Lucrezia Cippitelli (curator of Lubumbashi Biennale) and concludes with a conversation between 2022 IASPIS grant holders Luigi Coppola and Asli Uludag.
Combining contemporary artistic imagination with new strategies of action, the webinar aims to discuss the role of artistic practices that promote social transformation.
The webinar is conceived by IASPIS in collaboration with Royal Institute of Art Stockholm as part of Ex Situ.
The project research eventually includes two periods of residency in Lubumbashi at Atelier Picha: the first one of study and the second one of formalization of the work.
The final work, which consists of an installation of large banners painted on canvas, raw-earth vases, and material of research, study, and documentation of the entire process will be presented at the Picha Art Center and opened to the public during the next Lubumbashi Biennale.

Come si legge dal comunciato di Atelier Picha:
«La Biennale di Lubumbashi esplora la creazione contemporanea della scena artistica nella Repubblica Democratica del Congo e nel mondo. Oggi è uno degli eventi artistici più dinamici e sperimentali del continente africano. Per la sua prossima edizione, la biennale metterà in discussione la Tossicità come condizione di esistenza che colpisce indissolubilmente i mondi sociali sotto il titolo “ ToxiCité ” o “ ToxiCity ”. Come punto di partenza, il tema aprirà l’elaborazione collettiva di uno sguardo critico e trasformativo sull’ambiente sociale e culturale, a Lubumbashi e nel mondo.
Composta da due concetti, quello di “ Tossico ” e quello di “ Città ”, la prossima Biennale di Lubumbashi intende interrogarsi e riflettere sul legame tra la vita contemporanea nel contesto urbano postcoloniale di Lubumbashi e più in generale nel Sud urbano globale e l’impatto di una serie di processi industriali, economici, ecologici, sociali e culturali che hanno storicamente contribuito, nel bene e nel male, alla forma e alla dinamica della vita urbana in questa regione e in altre parti del mondo oggi. Focalizzandosi sul tema della tossicità, il comitato curatoriale di questa edizione si adopera per aprire uno spazio critico di impegno artistico e di riflessione per iniziare ad esplorare le possibili forme che questo “inventario delle tracce” potrebbe assumere, nella speranza che tale compilazione anche ci dice di più sui possibili futuri da considerare d’ora in poi.»

«The Lubumbashi Biennial explores the contemporary creation of the art scene in the Democratic Republic of Congo and around the world. Today, it is one of the most dynamic and experimental art events on the African continent. For its next edition, the biennial will question Toxicity as a condition of existence that inextricably affects social worlds under the title ‘ToxiCité’ or ‘ToxiCity’. As a starting point, the theme will open up the collective elaboration of a critical and transformative look at the social and cultural environment, in Lubumbashi and around the world.
Composed of two concepts, that of ” Toxic ” and that of ” City “, the forthcoming Lubumbashi Biennial intends to question and reflect on the link between contemporary life in the post-colonial urban context of Lubumbashi and more generally in the global urban South and the impact of a range of industrial, economic, ecological, social and cultural processes that have historically contributed, for better or worse, to the shape and dynamics of urban life in this region and elsewhere in the world today. Focusing on the theme of toxicity, the curatorial committee of this edition strives to open up a critical space of artistic engagement and reflection to begin exploring the possible forms this ‘inventory of traces’ might take, in the hope that such a compilation will also tell us more about possible futures to consider from now on.»
