rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The Other Shapes of Me), progetto di Emilio Vavarella e vincitore della 6. Edizione di Italian Council (programma di promozione di arte contemporanea italiana nel mondo della Direzione Generale Contemporanea del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali per il Turismo), arriva a Shanghai, Cina, con la mostra “Errori, Limiti e Malfuzionamenti”, curata da Ramdom e Arthub.
Il titolo del progetto – rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The Other Shapes of Me) – attorno al quale ruota tutta la mostra, fa riferimento alla prima riga di testo risultante dalla genotipizzazione del DNA di Vavarella. Il lavoro consiste in una traduzione, effettuata dalla madre dell’artista attraverso processi analogici e digitali, del codice genetico in tessuto, usando una delle prime macchine computazionali moderne: il telaio Jacquard. Il risultato finale è un’opera monumentale composta da un tessuto, un telaio e un film parte della collezione permanente del MAMbo — Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna.
La mostra di Shanghai dirappresenta il secondo capitolo di una trilogia di mostre: il primo capito dal titolo “Idee, ipotesi, assunti e oggetti” (luglio-settembre 2020, Gagliano del Capo) si è concentrato sulla dimensione aperta, performativa e rizomatica del progetto. Il secondo capitolo, dal titolo “Errori, limiti e malfunzionamenti”, è l’occasione, invece, per mettere in relazione il percorso artistico di Vavarella con The Other Shapes of Me insistendo sull’aspetto metodologico e nella fattispecie su uno dei temi più cari all’artista: l’errore e i limiti intrinsechi nella tecnologia.
The project rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The Other Shapes of Me) by artist Emilio Vavarella, winner of the 6th Edition of Italian Council (program to promote Italian contemporary art in the world by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism), is now landing in Shanghai, China, with the exhibition “Errors, Limits and Malfunctions”, curated by Ramdom and Arthub.
The exhibition revolves around Vavarella’s rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The Other Shapes of Me) project. Thetitle of the project refers to the first line of text resulting from the genotyping of Vavarella’s DNA. The work is based on the translation of his genetic code in a large fabric, through the labour of his mother, using one of the first modern computational machines: the Jacquard loom. The result is a monumental work composed of a fabric, a loom and a video, that is part of the permanent collection of MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna.
The exhibition in Shanghai represents the second chapter of a trilogy of exhibitions: the first chapter, “Ideas, Hypotheses, Assumptions and Objects” (July-September 2020, Gagliano del Capo, Italy) focused on the open, performative, and rhizomatic production process of the project. The second chapter, titled “Errors, Limits and Malfunctions”, bridges Vavarella’s artistic research in his rs548049170_1_69869_TT project with a wider reflection on his artistic methodology and, more specifically, on Vavarella’s approach to technological errors and the intrinsic limits of technology.
